THE LOWER-FARMYARD FARM

Private Property

La ferme de la Basse-Cour
The lower-farmyard farm

A fine example of a quadrilateral Brabant farm, located at the corner of rue Gailly and rue de Sauvenière in Walhain.

Its toponym indicates its geographical and historical proximity to the feudal castle of Walhain. The old farm of the “Basse-Cour” (namely “the Lower farmyard”), which was located in the meadow in front of the castle postern, was dismantled in the course of the 19th century. The circumstances which led to the gradual abandonment of the initial farming activities still remain to be clarified. Archaeological excavations leaded from 1998 to 2003 have helped to draw its outlines.

Moreover, its occupation apparently continued until the end of the 18th century. So there is a hiatus of almost two centuries during wich the two farms coexisted.

Is this a simple transfer of toponym or is there a real historical connection between the two farms? Maybe the future may give us the answer.

The most remarkable part is its one-storey main building, vintaged 1618 on the anchors of the facade, some of which still have “cross windows”.

The roof, pierced by passing dormers, ends with overhanging gables. To note also the presence of a porch roof for threshing, an element rarely preserved in our regions.

The stalls areas as well as the large long barn are much recent.
